Delegate Hala Ayala Statement on Neonatal Intensive Care Awareness Month

WOODBRIDGE, VA — In observation of Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) Awareness Month, Delegate Hala Ayala, Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor released the following statement, honoring NICU families and health care workers.

“This NICU Awareness Month, my heart is with all NICU patients and families and the fearless health care workers who support them. When I gave birth to my first child, we both almost lost our lives from complications during delivery. Far too many Black and Brown women in Virginia share my experience, and many have worse outcomes. The fact of the matter is, Black women are nine times more likely to lose their pregnancies in Virginia. This is unacceptable.”

“That’s why, in the House of Delegates, I was proud to introduce and pass legislation that delivered Virginia’s first Fetal and Infant Mortality Review Team to address and reduce racial disparities in preventable fetal and infant deaths. As Lieutenant Governor, I’ll build on my record and continue to serve as a champion for reproductive health care.”
