Delegate Hala Ayala Joins Democratic Statewide Ticket for Press Conference on Protecting Abortion in Virginia

“Winsome Sears wants to turn Virginia into Texas when it comes to reproductive rights.”

WOODBRIDGE, VA — Today, in response to her extreme opponent who pledged her support for a Texas-like abortion ban in Virginia, Delegate Hala Ayala, Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor, joined the Democratic statewide ticket and Senator Jennifer McClellan for a press conference. Delegate Ayala emphasized the importance of protecting reproductive health care in the Commonwealth.

Read a copy of her remarks below.

Here’s the bottom line, folks.

Winsome Sears wants to turn Virginia into Texas when it comes to reproductive rights.

Friday night, my opponent went on television and made it clear, if she were to be elected Lieutenant Governor, she would vote to bring a six week abortion ban like the one we’re seeing in Texas right here to our Commonwealth.

In a state Senate that’s tied 20-20 when it comes to choice, her declaration needs to be taken as more than just another one of her extreme right-wing talking points.

This is a pledge.

A pledge to strip every Virginian of their fundamental right to choose and weaponize reproductive health care.

A pledge to put a $10,000 bounty over the heads of any Virginian that dares to help their family member, neighbor, or friend make a decision about their own bodies.

A decision that should only ever be between an individual and their clinician.

And this isn’t the first time that my opponent has made clear where she stands on this issue.

What may be even more appalling than her declaration on Friday is her campaign’s attempt to walk it back in response to criticisms and questions.

A threat like this cannot be walked back. Especially when my opponent has already made it clear she does not support abortion even in cases of rape or incest.

Not when she believes that a pharmacist should be able to deny someone contraceptives based on their personal beliefs.

Not when she sponsored a parental consent law during her time in the House of Delegates.

Maya Angelou said it best when she said, “when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”

Winsome has shown who she is time and time again.

Let’s take her at face value.

While Glenn Youngkin has said he would allow abortions in cases of rape or incest, his Lieutenant Governor nominee does not.

What does Glenn have to say about this?

What’s Glenn Youngkin’s response to Winsome Sears saying the quiet part out loud? While Glenn got caught on tape promising to “go on offense” on abortion, Winsome went on public television and said it out in the open!

This Republican ticket has made it clear that, given the opportunity, they will restrict reproductive health care, which will disproportionately target Black and Brown Virginians.

This is the arc of injustice right here. Winsome Sears wants to amplify inequities in our reproductive health care systems.

Once again, Republicans are criminalizing our bodies.

I’m deeply disturbed by my opponent’s abhorrent platform, and I stand more ready than ever to defend Virginians’ fundamental rights.

The next Lieutenant Governor will likely cast the deciding vote when it comes to choice.

I want every single voter to know this: reproductive rights are on the ballot this November and there’s only one ticket who will protect your rights.

We can’t allow this dangerous and Republican ticket to bring Texas’s vigilante policies to our Commonwealth.

Policies that would disproportionately target Black and Brown Virginians.

Let’s not forget, 79% of Virginians support protecting access to abortion. That’s higher than the national average.

Plain and simple, Winsome and the Republican ticket are far too extreme for Virginia, and neither Terry, Mark, or I will stand by and allow them to take us backwards.

Not in our Commonwealth. Not in our country.
